On top of the world!
The Charterhouse site is in the middle of the Mendip Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. It’s a stunning landscape of steep slopes and undulating plateau punctuated by spectacular gorges and rocky outcrops. There are so many walks to choose from – you can take all day and explore Cheddar Gorge, or just go out for half a day and stay nearer the Centre. You can walk just for fun and exercise, or take a fresh look at history (did you know the Romans had a fort, just across the road, and the Victorians mined lead here?). It’s also a great place to study the limestone geology, or the wildlife and ecology of the slopes, flower rich grasslands and wooded combes.
Location: Charterhouse and the nearby ANOB and Blackmoor nature reserves.
Amazing views to Wales, if you see the sea turn red, then watch out for Viking raiders!
There are dozens of walks we can take you on, so let us know what interests you: wildlife, ecology, conservation, history (the Vikings really did come along here, and Quantock ponies were vital to the First World war!). You can also tell stories, make wild art, or just walk because the views are amazing, and once you’ve watched a buzzard or a red kite wheeling in the skies, you’ll never forget it.
We can organise a walk that is the right difficulty and length to suit you, or you can do your own thing, but we’ll send an instructor along as a guide and first aider.
